A day after Donald Trump announced he would impose tariffs on all steel and aluminium imports coming into the US, the prime minister, Anthony Albanese, has said he has spoken with the US president on the possibility of an exemption for Australia: ‘I presented Australia’s case for an exemption, and we agreed on wording to say publicly, which is that the US president agreed that an exemption was under consideration in the interests of both of our countries,’ he said.
