Senior Hezbollah leader Sheikh Muhammad Ali Hamadi was shot dead by unknown gunmen in eastern Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley region on Tuesday.
According to the Times of Israel, Hezbollah local commander Hamadi was shot six times in a drive-by of his home in Machghara in the western Bekaa district.
Hamadi was rushed to the a nearby hospital, where he died shortly.
According to local media reports, Lebanese authorities have opened a probe into the incident after suspicion of years-long family feud.
Hamadi also was in US federal agency FBI’s most wanted terrorist list for hijacked a plane with 153 passengers and crew members enroute to Rome from Athens.
This comes days before the end of the initial 60-day ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah.
Under the agreement, Israel has to withdraw its troops until January 26 from southern Lebanon. Meanwhile, Hezbollah must retreat north of the Litani river from the border with Israel.
The conflict between the two sides has displaced over 1.2 million Lebanese and 50,000 Israelis. Meanwhile, Israel’s intense bombing campaign has led to more than 3,700 deaths, mostly civilians, according to Lebanese officials, while over 130 have been killed in Israel.
