Solo Polyamory: How this new dating trend is redefining modern love and relationships

While love, relationships, and marriages are tough, it seems they are also becoming more complex in the contemporary times we live in. A new dating trend called Solo Polyamory is now challenging the idea of love and commitment in traditional relationships. As the name suggests, in Solo Polyamory people have multiple romantic partners at the same time, however they refrain from committing to any one of them and it seems this has gained much popularity among people these days.
Why do people engage in Solo Polyamory?
Traditionally, unconditional love, commitment, and marriage are an integral part of romantic relationships. However, many people today are opting out of commitment and marriage, and instead are focusing on personal freedom and self-love. This has led to many such individuals choosing to have multiple partners to fulfilling their emotional needs for connection, without putting any label on their relationship. Solo Polyamory is often chosen by people who are either commitment- phobes, those who aren’t looking anything serious, or those who do not believe in the institution of marriage. And while people in Solo Polyamory might have multiple partners, they aren’t committed to any one of them. To other people, they may often appear single as they refrain from having a conventional relationship, however people in Solo Polyamory engage in relationships on their own terms.
A survey by dating app Bumble in 2022 had concluded that 61% of Indian participants were open to having polygamous relationships. Interestingly, not only do singles have this lifestyle, but people who are married also practice polyamory, thus having multiple relationships outside of their marriage.
People who practise Solo Polyamory are generally highly independent. Instead of relying on one person for all their needs, they prefer to be self-reliant and lead life on their own terms. However, in the long run people in such relationships might face loneliness and a lack of deep emotional connections which can affect their mental wellbeing.
