Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) appointed middle-order batter Rajat Patidar as their new captain on Thursday, as reported by the Timesofindia.com earlier.
At the event to announced the new RCB captain, Patidar was presented the blue blazer and red cap, with Andy Flower, Mo Bobat and Rajesh Menon on stage alongside him.
Talking about Patidar’s appointment, the franchise’s COO, Rajesh Menon, said: “It was a critical decision for the RCB. We have had legends. This decision was not easy at all. It was deliberated internally and externally. We feel the decision is good for the franchise – over the next couple of years.”
After Virat Kohli passed on the opportunity to lead the franchise again, it was learnt that the RCB leadership spent considerable time deliberating their options. Having opted not to acquire a captain during last November’s mega auction, they were compelled to identify a leader from within their existing squad.

Sources said that following consultations with senior Indian players in the RCB setup, Rajat Patidar emerged as the primary candidate to captain the team starting from the 2025 season.
Speaking about Patidar’s elevation as RCB captain, Kohli said: “Wish you all the very best. The way you’ve grown, you’ve made a place in the hearts of fans all over India. This is very well deserved. Myself and other team members will be behind you. It is a big responsibility. To be seen who will take the franchise forward is a big honour for you. I am sure you will grow strength to strength.
“He’s evolved; his game has improved many levels. He has led the state team. He has shown what it takes to lead the franchise. I request fans to show him support and know he will do what is best for the team. Regardless of what happens, what is most important is the team and the franchise. Sending my best wishes to the team, franchise and look forward to working with everyone.”
The team also considered all-rounder Krunal Pandya, who possesses leadership experience and has consistently featured in the franchise’s strategic planning.
Patidar was one of the three players retained by RCB ahead of the mega auction for Rs 11 crore. Kohli was retained for Rs 21 crore and the uncapped Yash Dayal for Rs 5 crore.
Under Patidar’s leadership, Madhya Pradesh reached the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final last year, ultimately finishing runners-up to Mumbai. His personal performance was notable as well, scoring 428 runs across nine innings, placing him second in the tournament’s run-scoring charts.
Seven players had captained RCB over the years before Patidar; namely, Rahul Dravid, Daniel Vettori, Shane Watson, Kohli, Faf du Plessis, Shane Watson and Anil Kumble.
