Ohio State University reinstates ACT/SAT requirement for admissions

The Ohio State University today announced the reinstatement of the ACT/SAT test requirement for all new first-year undergraduate applicants to its Columbus campus, starting with the 2026 admissions cycle and beyond. Like many institutions, Ohio State adopted a test-optional pilot in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing students to apply without standardized test scores. Throughout the pilot, the university closely monitored student success metrics to assess the impact of test-optional admissions on academic performance and student outcomes.
Despite reinstating the test requirement, Ohio State emphasized that admissions decisions will not be based solely on test scores. The university will continue its longstanding practice of conducting a holistic review of each applicant, taking into account multiple factors to assess academic potential.
“The ACT/SAT score complements other measures to create a fuller picture of future academic success at Ohio State when used as part of a holistic review process,” said Vice Provost for Strategic Enrollment Management James Orr, as reported by Ohio State News.
He further explained that internal analysis indicated students who submitted test scores generally had higher grade point averages and were more likely to progress through their academic programs successfully. “Our analysis shows Ohio State students who submit test scores have higher grade point averages and are more likely to progress through the university,” Orr said, as reported by Ohio State News.
The reinstated testing requirement applies to all programs and degree types for first-year undergraduate applicants to Ohio State’s Columbus campus. However, Ohio State’s regional campuses and Ohio State ATI will continue their open-access policy for Ohio residents, meaning standardized test scores will not be considered for admission at those locations.
As universities nationwide reassess their admissions policies post-pandemic, Ohio State’s decision reflects a growing trend of institutions refining their approach based on data-driven insights. While standardized tests will now play a role in admissions, the university reaffirms its commitment to a comprehensive evaluation process that considers each applicant’s full academic profile. Students applying in 2026 and beyond should prepare accordingly, ensuring they present a well-rounded application that highlights both their test scores and broader academic achievements.
