Maintenance for working woman? Supreme Court to decide

NEW DELHI: Every man is duty bound under law to provide maintenance to his wife even if he is unemployed but what about in cases where the wife is employed and earning handsomely? Can she claim maintenance from her estranged husband? Supreme Court on Friday decided to adjudicate the issue, reports Amit Anand Choudhary.
While hearing a legal battle between a working couple, the bench asked them to place before it their salary slips from Jan last year. Both the husband and wife are assistant professors and are living separately. The adjudication of the case would have wider implications as many cases of working couples are coming before court on the issue of maintenance.
The bench was hearing a plea of the wife seeking maintenance. Opposing her plea, advocate Shashank Singh, appearing for the husband, told the court that she was earning around Rs 60,000 per month and both of them were holding the post of the same grade.
