Jaishankar discusses border security with UN secretary general's special envoy on Myanmar

NEW DELHI: External affairs minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday held discussions with UN special envoy Julie Bishop in Delhi. Their talks encompassed border security, refugee concerns, cross-border criminal activities from Myanmar, and economic assistance matters.
The meeting included an exchange of perspectives regarding the current political climate.
S Jaishankar shared on X: “Glad to meet UN special envoy of the SG on Myanmar Julie Bishop this evening in Delhi. Discussed our border stability, refugee situation, trans-national crime out of Myanmar and providing economic support. Exchanged views on the political situation.”

UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres appointed Julie Bishop of Australia as his special envoy on Myanmar in April last year.
This February, bilateral discussions between India and Myanmar focused on opportunities in pharmaceuticals, pulses and beans, petroleum products, and increased utilisation of the newly introduced Rupee-Kyat Trade Settlement Mechanism for mutual economic benefits.
The bilateral meeting included Jitin Prasada, Union Minister of State of Commerce and Industry, and HE U Minn Minn, Deputy Minister for Ministry of Commerce, Myanmar. Both nations highlighted opportunities for increased trade relations, as reported by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
The officials discussed potential collaborative areas for trade enhancement and recognised the significance of reinstating road-based border commerce, agreeing to implement measures accordingly.
