Investors lose over Rs 7 lakh cr in four days as markets slump over Trump's tariff concerns

NEW DELHI: Investors lost Rs 7.68 lakh crore from their wealth after a 4 day bloodbath at the Dalal street, over withdrawal of foreign funds and tariff war concerns.
Over this period, the BSE benchmark Sensex plunged by 1,272.01 points, or 1.61 per cent and the total market capitalisation of BSE-listed firms dropped to Rs 4,17,82,573.79 crore.
Markets ended in red after US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose fresh tariffs on all steel and aluminium imports into the country, alongside additional reciprocal tariffs.
“Indian benchmark indices saw a significant decline following this statement,” said Ameya Ranadive, chartered market technician and senior technical analyst at StoxBox.
On Monday, the BSE Sensex fell 548.39 points (0.70 per cent), closing at 77,311.80, its lowest in a week. In intra-day, the index dipped 753.3 points or 0.96 per cent, to 77,106.89.
“Markets displayed pessimism since early trades as stocks crumbed amid subdued corporate earnings and the ongoing uncertainty over global tariff war,” said Prashanth Tapse, senior VP (research) at Mehta Equities Ltd.
Among the 30 Sensex stocks, Power Grid, Tata Steel, Zomato, Titan, Bajaj Finance, NTPC, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Tata Motors were the biggest laggards.
On the other hand, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank, Tech Mahindra, HCL Tech, and Tata Consultancy Services managed to trace an upward momentum.
“The US tariff threats continued to impact the market sentiment. Domestic yield is inching higher as investors stay cautious on riskier assets and navigate their investments to safe haven assets like gold,” said Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Financial Services.
The BSE smallcap index fell 2.25 per cent, while the midcap index dropped 2.06 per cent. All sectoral indices finished in red:

Sectoral indices Drop (%)
Realty 2.69
Metal 2.63
Consumer durables 2.61
Utilities 2.49
Consumer discretionary 1.94

Overall, 3,032 stocks declined, 1,070 advanced, and 123 remained unchanged on the BSE.
