'Have a boy so our legacy continues': Chiranjeevi says he is scared Ram Charan might have another girl, sparks controversy

NEW DELHI: Actor-turned-politician K Chiranjeevi sparked headlines on Wednesday after he said that he wants his son, RRR superstar Ram Charan, to have a boy next to “continue the legacy,” while expressing concern that he “might welcome another girl again.”
Speaking at the Brahma Anandam pre-release event, where he was the chief guest, the former Union minister said that, “When I’m at home, it doesn’t feel like I’m surrounded by my granddaughters; it feels like I’m a ladies’ hostel warden, surrounded by ladies all around.”
“I keep wishing and telling Ram Charan, at least this time, to have a boy so that our legacy continues. I’m scared that he might again have a girl, but he has lovely kids,” he added.

Chiranjeevi’s comments about wanting a grandson to “continue the legacy” have stirred mixed reactions on social media.
While some fans defended his remarks as lighthearted banter, others criticised them for reinforcing outdated gender biases.
One user shared the viral video on X, commenting: “Chiranjeevi is scared his son Ram Charan might have another daughter. In 2025, the obsession with a male heir continues. Disappointing, but not surprising.”

” I have a girl and I have heard from 100s of people to give birth to a boy next. It feels horrible when people want us to control things I can’t,” it added.
Another remarked, “Chiranjeevi is worst to the core. I condemn his comments regarding the girl child.”
While a third user defending his remarks asserted, “There’s nothing wrong with wanting a boy in a house full of girls. The problem arises when someone desires only a boy and disregards having a girl. Wanting both a boy and a girl is about balance, not bias.”

Chiranjeevi has two daughters, Sreeja Konidela and Sushmita Konidela, and is a grandfather to four granddaughters—Navishka and Nivrati from Sreeja, and Samara and Samhitha from Sushmita.
His son, Ram Charan, and daughter-in-law, Upasana, welcomed their baby girl, Klin Kaara, on June 20, 2023.
