Eid-ul-fitr, also known as the ‘Festival of Breaking the Fast’ is one of the two most revered festivals in the Islamic religion, with the other being Eid-ul-adha. The festival marks the end of the month of Ramada, the Muslim holy month of fasting and is celebrated during the first three days of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar. The festival also symbolises religious faith, purity, renewal, generosity and togetherness in the name of Allah.
How is Eid-ul-Fitr celebrated?
Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated by Muslims to give thanks to Allah for giving them the strength to survive a month of fasting. The day begins by waking up before the sunrise and performing Salah (prayer) and Ghusl (ablution). Next, people get ready for the day, wear new clothes and share breakfast with family and friends. Observers of the day also ensure that Zakat-al-Fitr, a small charity donation is paid before the Eid salah. Then people go on with greeting and wishes each other a happy Eid and visiting all friends and family to celebrate the occasion together.
The day’s feast is a grand affair where traditional dishes like sheer kurma, biryani, kebabs, rose milk, and other sweets are made. The children in the family also receive Eidi, the gift of Eid by their elders which may include token money, other gifts and blessings.
