According to Ayurvedic health coach Dimple Jangda, yoghurt or curd is considered one of the heaviest foods in Ayurveda. Its sour and fermented nature can react with body heat and worsen acid reflux. Eating curd while experiencing acidity can raise body temperature and increase fermentation in the gut, leading to more discomfort. Instead of providing relief, curd could make acidity worse.

What To Do Instead?

If you rely on curd but still experience acidity, Jangda recommends switching to buttermilk (chaas) instead. Buttermilk is lighter, has cooling properties, and can help calm the digestive system while reducing discomfort.

If you frequently experience acidity, making small changes to your diet and lifestyle can help manage the issue. Nutritionist Deepsikha Jain shares five simple tips:

1. Eat Smaller Portions

Eating smaller meals instead of large ones can help control acid reflux. Using smaller plates and bowls makes portion control easier and also supports weight management.

2. Drink Ginger Tea

Swap your morning coffee for ginger or herbal tea to ease acidity. Ginger aids digestion and helps with bloating, gas, and indigestion. It’s a great post-meal drink for better nutrient absorption.

3. Add Healthy Fats

Replace processed and fried foods with nuts and seeds. Almonds, flaxseeds, and cashews are rich in healthy fats that help combat acidity. A handful of these daily can support digestion.

4. Choose Non-Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits are high in acid and can trigger acidity. Instead, go for non-citrus options like bananas, apples, and watermelons. Their fibre content supports digestion and prevents stomach issues.

5. Try Plant-Based Milk

Dairy milk contains casein, which can be hard to digest and may aggravate acidity. Switching to almond or coconut milk is a gentler option for teas, coffees, and everyday consumption.
