In a four-cornered fight at Okhla, AAP‘s Amanatullah Khan achieved a hat-trick, notching up 88,943 votes. BJP‘s Manish Chaudhary was the runner-up with 65,304 votes. Delhi riots accused and AIMIM candidate Shifa Ur Rehman, in jail since April 2020, was third with 39,558 votes while Congress councillor Ariba Khan, daughter of veteran neta Asif Khan, stood fourth with 12,739.
Amanatullah’s margin was 23,639 votes, lower than in 2015 (64,532 votes) and 2020 (71,664 votes).

Despite a potential split between AAP, AIMIM and Congress of Okhla’s 43% Muslim vote, he was backed by most in the community.
The seat has elected a minority MLA since 1993, when Parvez Hashmi won on a Janta Dal ticket. He was sent to the assembly from 1998 to 2008 as a Congress candidate. Asif Mohd Khan secured the byelections as an RJD nominee in 2009 and won on a Congress ticket in 2013. The constituency then became a stronghold of Amanatullah.
Amanatullah remains popular despite several controversies. Last year, ED arrested him over alleged financial irregularities in Delhi Waqf Board. In May, he and his son were booked for allegedly assaulting employees of a petrol pump after an altercation. Recently, Delhi Police fined his son Rs 20,000 for a traffic violation. After his win, Amanatullah said: “Our seniors lost their seats and we lost polls. I’m disappointed because we won’t be able to serve the people… I’m grateful to people of Okhla for placing their trust… will fulfil the work that needs to be done.”
