The 2025 Delhi assembly elections saw a significant shift in voter preferences, leading to a historic victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and ending their 27-year exile from power.
The BJP improved its vote share by 7.3 percentage points to secure 45.8 per cent of votes, while the AAP saw its share dip by nearly 10 percentage points to 43.8 percent.

Meanwhile, the Congress saw its vote share go up by 2 percentage points to 6.4 percent.
Though the difference between AAP and BJP in terms of voter percentage was just two points, the seat share graph presented an entirely different picture.
The BJP was able to translate its increase in voter percentage into a whopping addition of 40 seats. The nearly 10 percentage point decrease in vote share of AAP, resulted in the party losing 40 seats.
The increase in Congress’ vote share yielded no seats for the party, which for the third time in a row failed to open its account in the Delhi assembly elections.
Several top AAP leaders, including former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, lost their seats. Kejriwal was defeated in New Delhi by BJP’s Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma by 4,089 votes. Former deputy CM Manish Sisodia lost in Jangpura to BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah by a narrow margin.
PM Modi’s popularity and guarantees of continued free welfare schemes also influenced voters. Many voters who had previously supported the BJP in Lok Sabha elections but not in assembly polls corrected their decision in the 2025 elections, due to growing confidence in PM Modi’s leadership.
The BJP also saw increased support from Muslim voters, with approximately 12-13 per cent of the community voting for the party, compared to only 3 per cent in the last election
