China Square Expands in Nairobi, Sparking Debate Over Retail Competition

A Chinese-owned retail chain offering affordable, Chinese-made products, has rapidly expanded in Nairobi, opening its sixth branch at Two Rivers Mall. Shoppers are drawn by the low prices and unique items, but the chain’s growth has stirred concerns among local retailers. They argue that China Square’s pricing strategy creates an uneven playing field. The chain faced opposition in its early days, with protests from traders and threats of deportation for its managing director. Despite this, China Square continues to thrive, with the company defending its model as beneficial for consumers by encouraging healthy competition.
