NEW DELHI: Former South African pacer Dale Steyn made a bold prediction after Sunrisers Hyderabad dismantled Rajasthan Royals with a colossal 286/6 in their IPL 2025 opener at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Sunday. Leading the charge was Ishan Kishan, whose blistering 106* off 47 balls powered Sunrisers to a commanding 44-run victory.
Kishan’s masterclass, laced with 11 fours and six sixes, marked his maiden IPL century on debut for his new franchise. Travis Head also played a crucial role, smashing 67 off 31 balls as Sunrisers picked up right where they left off last season. Their total of 286/6 is now the second-highest in IPL history, just behind their own record of 287/3 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2024.
Interestingly, Sunrisers Hyderabad now holds the top three highest totals in IPL history.
Impressed by their explosive start to the season, Steyn—who represented Sunrisers Hyderabad from 2013 to 2015—took to social media with a bold prediction:
“Small prediction. April 17 we’ll see the first 300 in IPL. Who knows, I might even be there to see it happen.”
The date he mentioned is when Sunrisers Hyderabad take on Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium—setting the stage for another high-scoring spectacle.
The two sides produced fireworks last season when Sunrisers smashed 277/3 against the five-time champions in Hyderabad.
Will IPL witness its first-ever 300-run total this year? Steyn certainly thinks so.
