“The Competent Authority has approved the assignment of additional charge of the post of Secretary, Department of Revenue to Shri Ajay Seth, IAS (KN:1987), Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs upon relinquishment of the charge of the post by Shri Tuhin Kanta Pandey, IAS (OR:1987), till the appointment of a regular incumbent or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” said the government order.
The decision comes as part of the administrative reshuffle entailed by the former Finance Secretary’s Pandey’s move to SEBI who will now contribute to the country’s financial markets regulator
Ajay Seth, a 1987-batch IAS officer of the Karnataka cadre, has been serving as the DEA Secretary since 2021. With extensive experience in finance and economic affairs, Seth has been instrumental in shaping policies related to economic growth, fiscal management, infrastructure financing, and digital payments.
His additional charge as Revenue Secretary comes at a time when the government is focusing on tax reforms, revenue mobilisation, and simplifying compliance frameworks.
Seth’s dual charge is expected to ensure continuity in policy implementation while the government finalises a permanent appointment for the post. The government is expected to announce a full-time Revenue Secretary soon, with Seth continuing to manage both portfolios in the interim.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on Thursday approved the appointment of Finance Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey as the new Chairman of SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India). Pandey will assume office for an initial tenure of three years.
A CNBC-TV18 report had earlier said that Pandey was among a list of contenders for the role.
