Maharashtra reports another GBS death, India toll 26

CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR: District health authorities on Thursday reported the death of a 14-year-old boy from Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), taking the countrywide toll in the recent outbreak of the rare neurological disease to 26. The patient, identified as Yash Nitin Hiwrale, was admitted in a private hospital on Jan 20 and died on March 17.
The authorities criticised the hospital for failing to report the GBS case. Health officer Dr Paras Mandlecha said all private hospitals and practitioners had been asked to report suspected or confirmed GBS cases. However, this wasn’t done in Nitin’s case. A health team has since visited the hospital to gather medical records. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar has recorded 28 GBS cases this year, with 25 recoveries. Maharashtra had reported its last GBS death on March 3.
