Vasai: A bundle of 175 answer sheets of the HSC board were found burnt after the house in which they were kept by a teacher caught fire in the afternoon of March 10 (Monday). Though the fire was doused by neighbours before the fire brigade could arrive, many of the answersheets were burnt beyond any use. An FIR has been filed against the teacher who carried the papers home.
A few papers which were not damaged confirmed the answer sheets belonged to students from the commerce section and were from the exam dated Feb 15 – Organisation of Commerce and Management. The bundle of papers was kept on a sofa which was reduced to ashes. The teacher whose house caught fire worked at Utkarsh Vidyalaya and Junior College in Virar and had carried the sheets with her. The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has now registered an FIR against the moderator Priya Rodrigues and principal Mugdha Lele of the junior college from Virar.
“When we reached the house on Nanbhat Road, Virar (W), we saw the house fire was brought under control by neighbours,” said one of the personnel from Vasai-Virar municipal corporation fire brigade department. He confirmed there papers on the sofa which were burnt. “We got rid of the smoke which had accumulated,” he added.
Cops from Bolinj police station reached the spot and conducted a spot panchnama. Prakash Sawant, a cop at Bolinj police station, said the examiner had checked the answer sheets and made a note of the marks and Rodrigues, the moderator, was supposed to recheck those, but meanwhile the papers got burnt when no one was in the house. Police have filed a case of disobedience to an order passed by a public servant and of loss/damage to public property.
A board official from Mumbai Divisional Office said moderators are not supposed to carry papers home.
