A car crashed into a group of people in Munich on Thursday, injuring at least 20, some seriously, police said. The fire service reported that children were among the injured. Authorities have launched a major operation in the Dachauer Strasse area, with a strong police presence on-site. The driver of the vehicle has been arrested.
At the time of the incident, a demonstration organised by the service workers’ union ver.di was taking place. It remains unclear if any demonstrators were among the injured.
Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter expressed his shock over the incident, saying that he was “deeply shocked” and confirming that children were among those hurt.
This incident comes less than two months after a deadly attack at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, where the death toll rose to six, including a 9-year-old boy. The suspect, 50-year-old Saudi psychiatrist Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, was arrested at the scene.
