Delhi Election Results 2025: Despite setback, AAP performs strongly in Muslim-majority assemblies
Delhi: AAP’s Amanatullah Khan accuses admin, EC of “conspiring” to slow voting process

In the Delhi Assembly elections held on 5 February 2025, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) faced significant challenges, with several senior leaders on the brink of defeat. However, the party’s candidates performed notably well in Muslim-majority constituencies, securing victories in six out of the seven seats where the community holds substantial voting influence.
According to the latest results, AAP candidates have won in Chandni Chowk, Matia Mahal, Babarpur, Seelampur, Okhla, and Ballimaran, with Mustafabad being the only exception.

Delhi Election Results 2025

In the 2020 elections, the party secured all seven of these seats with large margins. Prior to the polls, AAP leaders had acknowledged that their victory margins might decline.
Despite concerns within the Muslim community that AAP had not adequately supported them, particularly during the 2020 riots and the anti-CAA protests, many still viewed the party as the only viable alternative capable of challenging the BJP.
An AAP leader from the minority community commented on Saturday that the support from Muslim voters was a “consolation” given the party’s overall electoral performance. While only 16 Muslim candidates stood in the 2020 elections, the number doubled this time, with smaller parties such as the BSP and AIMIM fielding candidates from the community.
Constituency-wise Breakdown:

  • Chandni Chowk: AAP’s Punardeep Singh Sawhney defeated the BJP’s Satish Jain by 16,572 votes.
  • Matia Mahal: AAP’s Aaley Mohammad Iqbal is leading by 42,207 votes.
  • Babarpur: Gopal Rai of AAP won with a lead of 18,994 votes.
  • Seelampur: Chaudhary Zubair Ahmad from AAP won with a lead of 42,477 votes.
  • Okhla: AAP’s Amanatullah Khan is leading by 30,030 votes.
  • Ballimaran: Imran Hussain of AAP won by 29,823 votes.
  • Mustafabad: In a closely contested battle, AAP’s Adeel Ahmad Khan is trailing by 17,578 votes, with BJP’s Mohan Singh Bisht leading.

What about AIMIM?
The Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM contested two seats with a sizeable Muslim population—Okhla and Mustafabad. However, it failed to gain a significant foothold. In Mustafabad, BJP’s Mohan Singh Bisht led the race, while AAP’s Adeel Ahmad Khan trailed in second place. AIMIM’s candidate, former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain, was in third place. In Okhla, AIMIM’s Shifa ur Rehman Khan managed to secure second place, though the BJP was ahead.
Congress’s Decline
Despite Congress focusing on the Muslim community during its campaign, this did not translate into electoral success. The party finished third in six of the seven seats and was a distant fourth in Okhla. A Congress leader admitted that the party had failed to convince Muslim voters that it was a strong enough contender to defeat the BJP. “We could not persuade the community that we had the strength to challenge the BJP. This was largely due to our poor performance in the last two elections,” the leader stated.
Muslims, along with Dalits and residents of slum clusters (jhuggi-jhopdi), have historically played a crucial role in AAP’s victories, contributing to the party’s landslide wins in the 2015 and 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, where it secured 67 and 62 seats out of 70, respectively. However, the latest trends suggest that AAP’s dominance in the national capital is facing significant challenges.
