NEW DELHI: Foreign secretary Vikram Misri on Friday said India has always raised the issue that people, including those who have been deported, should be properly behaved with. Misri’s response came on a question regarding the manner in which illegal Indian migrants were deported by the US in handcuffs and shackles.
“We are in touch with the American officials over this. We are in constant touch with them, and we have always said that the people, including those who have been deported, should be properly behaved with,” Misri said, adding that more deportation flight will be arriving in India soon.
“The description by the EAM of the standard operating procedure relating to the use of restraints which has been communicated to us by US authorities including the immigration and customs enforcement. EAM attracted attention to the fact that these have been in practice for a long period of time…On the issue of mistreatment, it is a valid issue to raise and we continue to emphasise to US authorities that there should be no mistreatment of deportees…We will continue to take up any instances of mistreatment that come to our attention. Action needs to be taken across the system against the underlying ecosystem that thrives on promoting illegal immigration,” said Misri.
The foreign secretary said that a total of 498 Indian citizens have been identified for deportation and the ministry received details of 298 individuals.
He said, “In recent conversation we have sought details about potential returnees from US we have been told that there are upto 487 presumed Indian citizens with final removal order with the US authorities. We have sought details and identifying details and particular have been supplied to us with regard to 298 individuals. We received this a short while ago, we are checking on this and will revert on this with out US counterparts on these issue, about the others we have not yet been provided details.”
