The European Union and France have condemned recent attacks on foreign embassies in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as protests intensify over Rwanda-backed M23 rebels advancing into Goma. Demonstrators in Kinshasa vandalized diplomatic buildings, including the French, Belgian, Dutch, Kenyan, Rwandan, Ugandan, and US embassies. Consequently, the US Embassy has urged its citizens to leave the city while commercial vehicles are available. The unrest follows the M23 rebels’ seizure of Goma, a city in the country’s mineral-rich eastern region, and the surrender of over 1,200 Congolese soldiers. Protesters accuse foreign nations of complicity and demand that the international community put pressure on Rwanda to halt the advance. Germany has already suspended talks planned for February with Rwanda in response to the crisis. Meanwhile, Congo’s government continues efforts to halt the rebel advance in the mineral-rich region.
